Rory Kennedy Talks about Her Life and WorkRobert Kennedy’s Youngest Child Created Her Own Niche
Unlike others in her famous family who have gone into politics, Rory Kennedy is a documentary filmmaker.
Rory Kennedy, the eleventh child of Robert and Ethel Kennedy, was born six months after her father was assassinated. Unlike some of the other family members (her sister Kathleen was the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland and her brother Joseph was a Congressman from Massachusetts), Rory has taken a different path in life. Rory Kennedy’s Life and WorkRory was an active campaigner for the Obama for President Campaign. When asked if she would consider running for any office herself, she calmly replied, “I’m not interested at this point in running for office.” “I love making documentaries,” Rory declared. “I started making them out of college. It really came out of my desire to do kind of social activism and I felt like this way to communicate issues was through film and media because that’s how people got their information.” Her brother Douglas is a correspondent for Fox News, but Rory is not interested in taking that path. “I’ve never been that interested in being a correspondent, but I just love making documentaries and I love the time that you can commit to particular subjects, and the format, and how you can get really in depth, and then you go on to other subjects, so it’s not this one issue for ten years. You can cover a lot. You can build relationships with different people. I think it’s a great learning process and I continue to be challenged by it and I feel really lucky to be doing this.” Rory Kennedy is the Mother of Three ChildrenMs. Kennedy has young children: Georgia, age six, Bridget, age four, and 23 month old Zachary. “I do usually one documentary a year. I have three young children, so I finished this and I’m taking a little break with them and then I’m going to start something new.” Kennedy makes her home in Brooklyn and loves spending time with her kids whenever she can. “I love swimming with my children, taking them to the beach and just playing with them, talking to them, reading to them, helping them learn how to read and write.” As for her next project, Rory Kennedy does not have anything definite yet, but she will be working on another documentary again. She won the primetime Emmy in 2007 for her film Ghosts of Abu Ghraib and has won several other awards. She’s a director, producer, campaigner, and a mother, and a very confident woman. In about a year this woman, the youngest child of Robert Kennedy, will reach the age of her father when he was assassinated, yet Rory never met her dad.
